Title: The Amazon is burning and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro doesn’t care

Source: Los Angeles TimesLink: https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2019-08-26/the-amazon-is-burning-and-its-more-important-than-you-realize

Fact: The Amazon rain forest, with it’s vast canopy of tress and other lush vegetation, removes about 5% of the global carbon that humans emit into the atmosphere every year.

Claim: China is replacing soy that it used to buy from U.S. farmers with soy from Brazilian farmers, which increases that rewards for cutting yet more of the rain forest.

Opinion: Bolsonaro was not receptive: he accused the leaders of embracing colonialism by telling Brazil what to do. But there’s nothing colonial in asking a neighbor to stop lighting fires that affect the rest of us.

Editorial: The Amazon is burning and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro doesn’t care

Based on the featured article, “Editorial: The Amazon is burning and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro doesn’t care,” by   The Times Editorial Board, Los Angeles Times, states that President Bolsonaro does not care about the forest burning and the land and is now waiting to be farmed and re-developed. The article also states that President Bolsonaro doesn’t care about having the forest being protected and wants it to burn down, which has already spread by the size of a football field in minutes. A meeting has been held in France, G-7, where international leaders has accused Bolsonaro for the land use and failed to flow the environmental policies. G-7 has spent more than $20 million dollars to aid Brazil and Bolivia with firefighting equipment. The article also states that French President  Emmanuel Macron has made a pledge to form an alliance to restore the reforestation. It seems that other countries are stepping up to help the Amazon rainforest, expect for Bolsonaro and Trump. Between President Trump’s trade war with China, and the deforestation of the Amazon, they both affect us all, and it is something that both President Bolsonaro and President Trump are oblivious about and completely disregarded the well-being of the world. The troubling effect of the Amazon is also putting an increase on Global Warming, and if we do not start now on trying to not only restore the Amazon, but also fix other environmental issues, our world will be able to last longer and continue to produce the resources that we are going to continue to need in the future. We must all help the world, and also need Leaders to step up and help one another to make the world a better place.

WRT 101S Homework (Due 8/27)

  1. According to Alex Reid, what are the benefits of doing an online blog for a writing class? Answer: The benefits of doing an online blog for a writing class is being able to have more ideas on what topics you would want to write. Blogging also gives you the ability to control the length, format, and subject, which develops into informal writing. Other benefits of having a blog in writing class is practicing the important material of writing and improving your writing skills.
  2. What are your feelings about keeping a blog, good and bad? Answer: For me blogging is more of a hobby, but it is beneficial for writing in general because of the opportunities of exploring interesting topics, and also having the freedom to write what you want to write, without having to worry about how long the topic needs to be or the font size. Blogging is a good way to be very creative in writing and can also lead to having more success on wanting to write, with less difficulties of finding a topic, while also improving your writing skills. The negative thing about blogging is the amount of time it will take to get use to using it for the first time and finding topics that would really interest me to write about.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
